The room the house breathes in
A liwan is the arched room that opens onto the courtyard. Three walls and an opening. Shaded in the afternoon, always a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house, and never quite indoors or out.
It's where people sat before air conditioning made the rest of the house habitable. It's still, in most homes that have one, the room you end up in.
We named the brand after it because that's the feeling we were trying to bottle, not an event, not an occasion, just a room that's ready before anyone arrives.
Why we started
Walk into any home fragrance section in the Kingdom and you get two options.
At one end, heavy oud and gold packaging, priced for gifting and built to announce itself from the doorway. At the other, cheap air freshener that smells like a rental car.
There was nothing in between. Nothing you'd actually want to live with — restrained enough to sit in a bedroom, designed well enough to leave on a console, and priced so you could buy one for yourself on a Tuesday rather than saving it for a wedding.
So we made it.
How we build
One scent at a time. We'd rather get one right than launch six and hope. Fig & Frankincense took 20+ rounds of reformulation before we were happy with how it held in a large, air-conditioned room — which turns out to be a very different problem from how a fragrance behaves in a European test lab.
Designed for the vessel, not around it. The arch shape isn't decoration. The frosted amber glass, the recessed relief, the turned walnut collar — the bottle is meant to be kept and refilled long after the first fill is gone.
No shortcuts on the boring part. Safety data sheets, IFRA conformity, hazard labelling on the carton. It's the least interesting part of building this and it's non-negotiable.
Where we are
